Bicycle Club

The Saints Bicycle Club was created to give students at Santa Maria High School access to bicycles, helping them develop riding skills, confidence, and a sense of community. Through our partnership with BiCi Centro, students not only learn how to ride but also gain hands-on experience with bicycle maintenance and repair, fostering self-sufficiency and a deeper connection to sustainable transportation. Our goal is to empower students by providing them with the resources and knowledge to explore their city by bicycle, whether for recreation or commuting. We hope this model can inspire other schools to create similar opportunities for their students.

Pathfinders: Exploradores Del Camino and Saints Bicycle Club

The Leadership Santa Maria Valley (LSMV) Class of 2025, an umbrella of the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce, proudly launched Pathfinders: Exploradores del Camino, a community bike initiative that opens doors for students who’ve never had the chance to own or even ride a bicycle.

With support from generous sponsors, the class helped the Saints Bicycle Club with the following:
  • Established a Bike Library at Santa Maria High School by providing bicycles, helmets, and safety kits purchased from BiCi Centro, MOVE Santa Barbara County. This bike library will allow students who do not have the ability to purchase a bike of their own to check out a bike for the school year.
  • Donated a Dero Fixit repair station and bike rack for the students at Santa Maria High School to support ongoing bicycle maintenance and accessibility.
  • Through the Pathfinders: Exploradores del Camino - Community Cycling Initiative Playbook, we incorporated curriculum from MOVE’s Freedom to Ride guide that will assist administrators in educating students on basic to advanced bicycle skills. With our Playbook, we also hope to encourage the expansion of this program to other high schools by providing the essential information needed to establish a school club, organizing fundraising efforts, and accessing additional resources.

For more information on how to implement this program in another school, review the Pathfinders: Exploradores del Camino - Community Cycling Initiative Playbook linked below.
